• heat dissipation, massive heat sinks are needed, some high powered solutions even use fan cooling to solve the heat issue, all heat sinks will eventually clog with snow, dust, or sand. Lamp failure results.
• Funding: With the Significant cost associated with street light implementation funding is a major issue, yes many major cities in America are installing LED street lamps but most are taking advantage of the Federal Stimulus Funds enacted by President Bush. Most of the funds are fast drying up or being diverted by your Mayor to offset budget deficits. Once the funds run out,, unless LED price drops significantly over the next few years, implementing LED lighting solutions in the near term would not be feasible.
• Lifetime: Most LED solution providers market the magical 50,000 hour lifespan of the Bulb, that's absolute bull. 50,000hrs lifespan is tested based on a junction temperature of 25 degrees Celsius in the LAB! Most of the LED lamps you are seeing out there are working at 60-70degrees Celsius Junction temperature. Plus alot also depends on the drivers that drive the LED lamps plus all the ancillaries that make up a lighting system. I am sure someone can actually make a near perfect system that can run to 50,000hrs using top notch components front to end..but HOW MUCH?
• Utility Companies: LED lighting and its associated savings would not mean much if the Utility Companies don't play ball. Utility Companies own most of the street lights in most countries. think about it, LED with the touted savings of 50% thereabout over existing lighting solutions...if they dont offer rebates or recognise the energy efficiency of the LED lighting solution then there would be NO Energy saving at all. Costs will still remain the same. From Utility Companies point of view, it wouldn't make financial sense to offer special tariffs, why?
• So this sexy new LED street lighting comes along and everyone, including the utilities, gets excited about saving a lot of energy, putting a lot less waste into the landfill and saving taxpayers a good chunk of change on maintenance avoidance. However, if LED lighting reduces by 50 percent or more the amount of electricity that will be used and therefore billed by the utility and maintenance costs go down to a bare minimum for the next 10-15 years, just how will the investor-owned utility pay for the higher cost of this new LED Equipment, offer an attractive monthly rate to municipalities and make an allowed rate of return?

Solar is a wonderful technology, so abundant, clean, noiseless etc etc.
Whats the catch then? Costs again is a major factor some of the arguments for LED apply also, I could do a huge writeup here but there is a word limit.

Which boils down to what the question "what CAN we do for the interim whilst waiting for all this sexy technology to mature?"
